Montserrat Costa Suros

Dr. Montserrat Costa Suros is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in the Earth Sciences Department, specifically within the Atmospheric Composition (AC) group. She also serves as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Girona (UdG). Her research focuses on aerosol-cloud interactions and their implications for Earth's radiative balance in the context of global climate change.

Dr. Costa Suros holds a PhD in Experimental Sciences and Sustainability from the University of Girona (2014), where she also earned her BSc in Environmental Sciences (2005) with an Extraordinary Award and a Master's Degree in Environment (2009). Her academic journey includes research stays at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (USA, 2011) and Vaisala Oyj (Finland, 2012), followed by postdoctoral positions at the University of Warsaw (2014-2016) and University of Cologne (2016-2019).

Her research interests center on aerosol-cloud interactions, ice nucleation (particularly the role of mineral dust like K-feldspar and quartz), radiative effects upon climate, aerosol and cloud observations, and model evaluation. She investigates how mineralogy affects ice nucleation and mixed-phase clouds, with significant implications for understanding climate change processes.

Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on quantifying the contributions of different aerosol types (mineral dust, marine aerosols, bioaerosols) to ice nucleation in mixed-phase clouds and assessing their radiative forcing effects. Her work increasingly integrates laboratory-based parameterizations into global chemistry-transport models, with emphasis on improving Earth system model representations of aerosol-cloud interactions.
