Dr. Nimer Sultany is a Reader in Public Law at the School of Law, Gender and Media, SOAS, University of London. He holds a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) from Harvard Law School and has held fellowships including the British Academy Fellowship (2016/17) and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at SUNY Buffalo Law School (2012/13). He serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Palestine Yearbook of International Law. Prior to SOAS, he practiced human rights law in Israel/Palestine and directed Mada al-Carmel’s Political Monitoring Project.

Research Interests: Constitutional theory, comparative constitutionalism, public international law, human rights law, and Israeli jurisprudence. His work critically examines legal frameworks in contexts of colonialism, occupation, and post-revolutionary states.
Publications & Awards: His seminal book Law and Revolution: Legitimacy and Constitutionalism After the Arab Spring (2017) won the 2018 International Society of Public Law Book Prize and the 2018 Peter Birks Prize for Legal Scholarship. Over 30 articles and edited volumes address topics like Palestinian rights, neoliberal jurisprudence, and democratic theory.
Grants/Advising: Extensive grants in legal research and mentorship of scholars like Ya-Wen Yang (2019 PhD thesis on migrant workers’ citizenship). Regular media commentary on Middle East legal issues.
Labs/Teams: Leads editorial work at The Palestine Yearbook of International Law and collaborates with Mada al-Carmel on socio-legal research.
