Nils Harald Sødal serves as Research Coordinator at the Academy of Opera, Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO), following his 2021 PhD defense on mental strength and creativity in artistic performance. His dual career bridges academic research and professional opera, with affiliations spanning the Norwegian National Opera (permanent soloist since 2011), European stages like Semperoper Dresden, and Norwegian symphony orchestras.
His research centers on contemporary opera and gender dynamics, exploring queer voices, fluid identity in Baroque reinterpretations, and Fach system evolution. Recent outputs (2024-2025) reveal a cohesive trajectory: interrogating vocal performance through gender lenses while innovating in interactive opera and sustainability. This work synthesizes artistic practice with theoretical rigor, particularly in translating classical works like Dichterliebe into Norwegian contexts.
Key projects include the Bergen International Festival’s Eight Songs for a Mad King (2017) and ongoing collaborations with Adrian Angelico Voje and Benedikte Sofie Ribe. Sødal holds a two-year working grant for contemporary opera research and contributes to award-winning CD releases, though specific scientific awards remain unnamed. His literary output includes three critically acclaimed novels, extending his creative exploration beyond music.
