Nils Hammarén is a Professor of Child and Youth Studies at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning (University of Gothenburg). He holds concurrent roles as Director of Studies for doctoral education at the department and has been a key member of interdisciplinary research groups focusing on youth, culture, and learning. His work spans over two decades, beginning with a PhD in Social Work (2008) analyzing young men’s identities in marginalized urban areas.
Research interests include youth studies, gender studies, migration and ethnic relations, and school-based social dynamics. His projects often address educational inequality, urban segregation, and the intersection of identity with systemic structures. Notable contributions include leading the EU-funded EUMARGINS project on young adult migrants’ inclusion/exclusion (2008–2011), and the Stena Foundation-funded research program Between resignation and faith in the future (2020–2024), examining educational access barriers in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
Hammarén’s publications critically analyze school violence, intercultural pedagogy, and youth marginalization. Recent work emphasizes reclaiming school narratives in stigmatized areas and resisting homosocial/heteronormative norms in education. He has contributed to policy debates on gender equality, anti-bullying strategies, and migrant integration through academic articles, edited volumes, and media engagement.
His interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, education science, and social work, with a focus on participatory methodologies and critical discourse analysis. Current leadership roles include chairing the Young People, Precariousness and Wellbeing (YPW) College at IPKL and coordinating research on youth resilience in segregated urban contexts.
