Nils G. Walter is the Francis S. Collins Collegiate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan, holding joint appointments in Biophysics, Biological Chemistry, and the Medical School. He is affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and serves as a Program Associate in the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. His research focuses on RNA biology and DNA nanotechnology, leveraging single-molecule techniques like smFRET and super-resolution microscopy. He directs the SMART Center and the Center for RNA Biomedicine, and co-founded a biotech startup in molecular diagnostics. Walter earned a Dr.-Ing. from TU Darmstadt (1995) and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Vermont (1999).
Research interests include RNA structure/function, co-transcriptional folding, and nanoscale biomolecular machines. His lab integrates chemical biology, bioinformatics, and big data analytics to study RNA-guided processes and DNA nanodevices. Recent work explores microRNA silencing mechanisms and FUS condensate dynamics. He advises PhD students like Rosa Romero and Emily Ellinger, and collaborates with centers such as the Rogel Cancer Center and the Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics.
Publications highlight innovations in chromato-kinetic fingerprinting for biomarker detection and mechanistic studies of riboswitches. His work bridges academia and industry, reflected in both scholarly contributions and entrepreneurial ventures. Grants and recognitions support his labs' cross-disciplinary training programs, preparing students for careers in academia, biotech, and national labs.
