Nikos Moudouros is a Lecturer at the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cyprus. His academic work focuses on the intersection of political Islam, Turkish politics, and Cypriot studies with particular emphasis on the Turkish Cypriot community.
Dr. Moudouros completed his BA in Turkish Studies (2005) from the University of Cyprus, MA (2007) from SOAS, University of London, and PhD (2012) from the University of Cyprus. His doctoral thesis examined 'Islam, Politics and Economy in Turkey. From the Bourgeoisie of Kemalism to the Capital of Islam'.
His research interests span the modern history of political Islam in Turkey, political economy of Turkey, contemporary political thought in Turkey, and the evolution of the Turkish Cypriot community from the 1950s to present. Moudouros has made significant contributions to understanding the Turkish Cypriot state of exception, the transformation of Turkey under AKP rule, and geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on the interplay between authoritarianism and neoliberalism in Turkey, the transformation of Turkish Cypriot political identity, and Turkey's evolving geopolitical doctrine. Recent works demonstrate increasing attention to pandemic-era labor policies in Turkey and the 'Blue Homeland' concept in Turkish geopolitical thinking.
Moudouros has authored several influential books including 'The Transformation of Turkey: From Kemalist Dominance to Islamic Neoliberalism' (2012), 'State of Exception in the Mediterranean: Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot Community' (2021), and 'Διεκδικώντας την Πατρίδα. Η Τουρκοκυπριακή Αντιπολίτευση την περίοδο 1964-2004' (2022). His scholarly output appears in prestigious journals such as Journal of Muslims in Europe, Nations and Nationalism, and Turkish Historical Review.
His work demonstrates a deep engagement with theoretical frameworks including Gramscian hegemony theory and state of exception concepts, applied to the Turkish and Cypriot contexts. Moudouros has established himself as a significant voice in Middle Eastern studies with particular expertise in Turkish-Cypriot relations and Turkish political transformation.
