Nikolaos Karadimitriou

Nikolaos Karadimitriou is a Professor in Urban Development and Planning at The Bartlett School of Planning, University College London. With a career spanning over two decades, he initially worked as a planning practitioner on significant projects including the Urban Audit Pilot Project for DG Regio and the Unification of the Archaeological Sites of Athens, followed by a role in the Organising Committee for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. He transitioned to academia in 2003 at the University of Reading before joining UCL in 2006.

His educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy from University College London (2007), a Diplom-Ingenieur from the University of Thessaly (1999), and a National Vocational Qualification in teaching from West Herts College (2011).

Professor Karadimitriou's research focuses on understanding territorial development as outcomes of socio-spatial transformation processes, examining urban development through three key lenses: socio-spatial interactions creating urban patterns, governance of urban infrastructure investment, and institutional mechanisms for managing territorial development. His work emphasizes how housing provision actively structures social interactions leading to measurable socio-spatial patterns like informal development, vertical segregation, and deprived areas.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on urban planning challenges across multiple continents, with particular attention to Greece, the UK, and Ethiopia. The research trends reveal consistent engagement with themes of urban segregation, sustainable development strategies, housing market dynamics, climate change adaptation in urban contexts, and the intersection of digital technology with urban planning processes. His work spans theoretical frameworks and practical policy applications.
