Niko Samuli Jaakkola is an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics, University of Bologna. He holds a DPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford and a BSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia. His research focuses on climate change economics, environmental and resource economics, and dynamic strategic behavior, particularly in contexts involving intertemporal decision-making among agents, such as states negotiating carbon emissions reductions. He has published in top journals including the Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, and Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists.
His research interests include the economics of stranded assets, carbon taxation, fossil fuel dynamics, and the role of technological breakthroughs in climate policy. He is affiliated with the CESifo network and OxCarre. Notable awards include the Policy Research Award at the INFER Annual Conference 2018 for his work on resource investment cycles. His teaching includes graduate-level courses on environmental economics and resource management.
He has held academic positions at institutions such as the Ifo Institute in Munich and Aalto University in Helsinki, and his work spans theoretical contributions to dynamic games and applied policy analysis.
