Nikki Theeuwes is a Junior Assistant Professor at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, affiliated with the Innovation Studies group within the Faculty of Geosciences. She teaches in the Global Sustainability Science Bachelor and Science and Innovation Management Bachelor programs while pursuing her PhD.

Her research examines policy coherence for sustainable development, focusing on the interplay between global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and localized governance frameworks in India. She investigates how gender inequality manifests in subnational SDG implementation, particularly under the Leave No One Behind agenda. Additionally, she analyzes academic travel practices through institutional, ideational, and interest-based lenses.
Recent publications highlight her work on gender dynamics in SDG governance and the environmental impacts of academic travel. Collaborations include research with M. J. Vijge and K. Beumer on policy design and sustainability, as well as studies with S. Shokrgozar and V. L. Ahonen on institutional travel practices.
