Dr Nikhaela Wicks is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Kent, affiliated with the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research. She joined in 2021 after teaching at the University of Portsmouth (2020–2021) and the University of Westminster (2016–2019). Her education includes a PhD from the University of Westminster, an MA in Criminology (University of Kent, Distinction), and a BA in Criminology and Social Policy (University of Kent, First Class).
Her research focuses on policing, race and ethnicity, and governance of nightlife. Her PhD involved a year-long ethnography examining racial discrimination in nightlife regulation, including interactions with police, door staff, and licensing officers. She critiques ‘color-blind’ policies and their impact on marginalized groups, particularly Black communities. She is a member of the International Night Studies Network and the Night Governance working group. In 2019, she won the ‘Best Presentation Award’ at the 14th Annual Ethnography Symposium.
Dr Wicks teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on policing, race, and nightlife. She co-created a curriculum redesign project with students to address racial blind spots in criminology education. She emphasizes student agency and inclusive pedagogy.
Professional affiliations include the British Society of Criminology, European Society of Criminology, and groups like the Punishment and Empire (University of Leicester) and Southernising Criminology (University of Oxford). She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
