Dr. Esmorie Miller is a Lecturer in Criminology at Lancaster University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), within the Law School department. Her research focuses on intersections of race, youth, gender, and justice, particularly examining the historical and contemporary racialization of punitive practices in youth justice systems across England and Canada. She holds a PhD (supervision interests include Youth, Race, Gender, and Theories of Punishment) and has authored influential works like Race, Recognition, and Retribution in Contemporary Youth Justice (2021), which critiques systemic racial exclusions in youth justice frameworks. Her research employs Critical Race Theory and historical methodologies to trace continuities of racialized punishment. Recent publications (2025) explore decolonizing criminology and applying CRT to historical analyses. She has received the Diversity in Curriculum Award for her contributions to inclusive scholarship. Miller's work bridges policy, theory, and activism, advocating for transformative youth justice practices centered on leniency and social care.
