Nii Addy serves as the Albert E. Kent Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Professor of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale School of Medicine. He directs the Faculty Development and Collaborative Excellence office and the Faculty Mentoring Program for the Minority Organization for Retention and Expansion (MORE). Previously, he co-chaired the Career Development Subcommittee of the ARCH Task Force in the Yale Department of Psychiatry and contributes significantly to graduate student and postdoctoral training programs.
Dr. Addy's research focuses on cholinergic, dopaminergic and L-type calcium channel mechanisms that mediate substance use and mood disorders, with particular emphasis on how tobacco product flavor additives alter nicotine use behavior and addiction. His work spans multiple disciplines including neuroscience, behavioral sciences, electrochemistry, and signal transduction, with strong applications to psychiatry and substance-related disorders. The pattern of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on nicotine addiction mechanisms, cocaine-seeking behavior, and the neurobiological underpinnings of mood disorders.
Dr. Addy serves on the editorial boards of prominent journals including Neuropsychopharmacology, Biological Psychiatry, and Neuropharmacology. He previously served as a grant reviewer for the Neurobiology of Motivated Behavior (NMB) Study Section of the National Institutes of Health's Center for Scientific Review.
As an academic leader, Dr. Addy has created and hosts the Addy Hour podcast, which explores intersections of neuroscience, mental health, faith, and culture. He has developed significant community partnerships with organizations including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), Yale University Chaplain's Office, Salvation Army, and collaborations with public figures like Grammy Award-winner Lecrae and former NBA All-Star Allan Houston. His community engagement work has been featured by National Public Radio (NPR), Newsday, and NFL Players Association.
Dr. Addy also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Carver Project, which aims to empower and connect individuals across university, church and society contexts.
