Nigel Unwin is a part-time Professor and Director of Research with affiliations at the University of Cambridge (MRC Epidemiology Unit, School of Clinical Medicine), the University of Exeter (European Centre for Environment and Human Health, College of Medicine and Health), and as an honorary Professor at the University of the West Indies (George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre). He specializes in public health epidemiology with a focus on non-communicable diseases and sustainable food systems.

He leads interdisciplinary projects including:
- Intervention Co-creation to Improve Community-based Food Production and Household Nutrition in Small Island Developing States (ICoFaN)
- NIHR Global Health Research Group on Community Food for Human Nutrition and Planetary Health in Small Islands (Global CFaH)
