Nigel Hooper is a Professor and Chair in Cell Biology at the University of Manchester's Division of Neuroscience within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. He holds leadership roles as Associate Vice-President for Research and Strategic Lead of the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre. Previously, he served as Director of Dementia Research (2015–2020) and Vice Dean for Research and Innovation (2016–2020). His research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's and prion diseases, exploring proteolytic mechanisms and protein-membrane interactions.
Education includes a B.Sc. (1984) and Ph.D. (1987) in Biochemistry from the University of Leeds. He held academic roles at the University of Leeds, including Professor of Biochemistry (2001–2014), before joining Manchester. Awards include Fellowship of the Royal Society of Biology (2016) and membership in Academia Europaea (2017).
Key research interests include ACE/ACE2 biology, prion protein biology, and Alzheimer's amyloid-β production. Current projects investigate ACE2 activation in Alzheimer's, receptors for neuroprotective proteins, LDL receptor proteolysis, and 3D stem cell models of dementia. His work bridges biochemical and cellular techniques with animal models and human tissues.
Over 96 publications span topics like tau proteolysis, neurovascular dysfunction, and protein catabolism. He advises journals such as Essays in Biochemistry and serves on the Biochemical Society’s Portland Press Board. Supervised 14 research students and led projects funded by MRC, Alzheimer’s Research UK, and other agencies.
