Nigel Copner is a Professor of Laser Physics and holds dual leadership roles as Head of the Aberystwyth Business School and Academic Lead for the Engineering Unit at Aberystwyth University. He earned his BSc (First-Class Honours) from Reading University (1988) and a PhD in Laser Physics from Swansea University (1992). His career spans academia and industry, including roles at JDS Uniphase (Senior Manager), DERA (Research Fellow), and Renishaw.
Research interests focus on photonics innovation, laser technology, and sensor systems. He has secured over £25M in research funding, including a £1M EPSRC/BBSRC grant for a novel TB detection system (2025) and £250K for low-cost high-silicon steel research. His patent portfolio exceeds 50 patents, generating >$50M annually through commercial applications like optical switches and lasers.
