Peter Merriman is a Professor in Human Geography at Aberystwyth University's Department of Geography and Earth Sciences. He holds academic qualifications including a BA and PhD from the University of Nottingham, and a Cert. FPSHE from the University of Reading. His roles include co-Director of the Centre for Transport and Mobility (CeTraM) and External Examiner for Human Geography at the University of Cambridge (2023–2026).
Research interests focus on cultural and historical geography, mobility studies, spatial theory, and cultural heritage. Key projects include the €3.2 million 'Ports, Past and Present' and the €3 million 'Coastal Uplands, Heritage and Tourism' initiatives. He has authored influential works like Driving Spaces (2007) and Mobility, Space and Culture (2012), and edited major texts such as the Routledge Handbook of Mobilities (2014).
Recognition includes Fellowships from the Academy of Social Sciences (2022), the Royal Geographical Society, and Senior Fellow status at Advance HE. He serves on editorial boards for journals like Mobilities, Cultural Geographies, and Journal of Historical Geography.
Teaching supervision spans cultural geography, mobility, spatial theory, and Welsh cultural history. Current PhD advisees include Anna Pennington, Lowri Ponsford, Kirsty Usher, and D.Prof. student Vaughan Williams.
