Dr. Nida Alahmad is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations of the Middle East at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. She previously held fellowships at Ghent University, Georgetown University, and The European University Institute. Her research focuses on state formation, political economy of oil, and Middle East politics. She has taught at New York University, University of Toronto, and the New School for Continuing Education, and worked with NGOs like the Committee to Protect Journalists and International Center for Transitional Justice.
Her academic background includes a PhD from The New School for Social Research and numerous awards such as the Frieda Wunderlich Memorial Award. Key research themes include state-building in Iraq, oil dependency, and the interplay between war and socio-political structures. She has published works on Iraqi statehood, US occupation policies, and sectarian dynamics. Current projects explore state theory through Iraq’s historical trajectory and the role of expert knowledge in governance.
Administratively, she serves as Programme Director for the MSc The Middle East in Global Politics and Convenor of the Middle East Research Group.
