Nicole L. Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education within the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. She serves as the CNPS Program Coordinator and coordinates The Resistance Lab, which focuses on ending gender-based violence through feminist consciousness-raising, high-quality research, and system-level change.
Dr. Johnson identifies as an intersectional feminist and focuses her research on the exploration and implementation of prevention programming for gender-based violence, including rape, intimate partner violence, and violence against trans and queer communities. Her work examines rape culture and develops culturally sensitive programming to address these issues. She employs theoretical orientations including Feminist theory, Generative Somatics, and Internal Family Systems in her clinical and research work.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on gender-based violence across multiple contexts, examining intimate partner violence globally, connections between violence against women and school shootings, rape culture in LGBTQ+ communities, and measurement of rape culture constructs. Her research spans interdisciplinary fields including psychology, sociology, gender studies, and public health.
