Nicole K. Brogden, PharmD, PhD, is the Ting-Fong and Nei-Jia Chin Professor in Pharmaceutics at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. She holds dual appointments as an Associate Professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics and Dermatology. Her research focuses on translational drug delivery systems, particularly microneedle and thermosensitive gel technologies for improving human health through targeted delivery to skin and impaired barrier sites.
Dr. Brogden’s work emphasizes clinical applications, including studies on micropore closure dynamics in diverse skin types and optimization of formulations for wound sites. She has secured research funding from the FDA, NIH, and industry partnerships. Her lab integrates interdisciplinary approaches, such as single-crystal x-ray analysis of drug compounds and biomaterials integration for gene therapy.
- Research Interests: Microneedle technology, skin physiology, formulation development for impaired skin, and transdermal drug delivery systems.
- Awards: Women of Innovation Award (2020), Genesis Award (UI College of Pharmacy), NIH Early Career Reviewer Program, and multiple travel/leadership grants.
- Grants: NIH, FDA, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and industry collaborations.
Publications highlight advancements in thermosensitive gels for naltrexone delivery, micropore closure disparities in skin of color, and antibiotic strategies for skin infections. Her lab’s clinical focus bridges basic science with real-world applications in palliative care and pain management.
