Nicole J Borges

Nicole J. Borges is Chair and Professor of Medical Education at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, where she also holds the endowed title of Edward Tulloh Krumm Professor of Medical Education. She leads the Department of Medical Education and is a nationally recognized scholar in medical education research.

Her research interests include:

• Personality and medical specialty choice
• Physician career development
• Noncognitive factors contributing to student success
• Team-based learning
• Medical education scholarship
• Health topics in medical education

Dr. Borges has authored or co-authored over 85 peer-reviewed journal articles in these areas. Her work reflects a strong focus on understanding how psychological and educational factors influence medical training and career paths. She is particularly known for her contributions to faculty development and educational leadership in academic medicine.

Her scientific awards include:

• Faculty Mentor Award (2009) from Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine
• Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship Award (2009) from the American Medical Association Foundation
• Fellow status in the Society of Counseling Psychology, American Psychological Association

Dr. Borges has held significant leadership roles in national organizations, including past president of the Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education (SDRME), Member-At-Large for AAMC CGEA (2011–2014), Chair of MESRE for AAMC SGEA (2015–2017), and SGEA Chair (2018–2019). She serves on the steering committee of the AAMC Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) program and was appointed to the AAMC Careers in Medicine Advisory Board in 2013. She also served as a public member on the Council on Education for the American Veterinary Medical Association. She mentors faculty and contributes extensively to peer review for academic journals.

She is trained as a health psychologist and was past chair of the Health Psychology Section of the Society of Counseling Psychology, American Psychological Association.
