Nicole De Silva is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Concordia University in Montreal. She holds a DPhil and MPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford, and a BSocSc in International Development & Globalization from the University of Ottawa. Her research focuses on how international institutions and laws promote human rights and legal accountability, with particular attention to Africa and Canada's engagement with these issues. She is a Faculty Affiliate at Concordia’s Social Justice Centre and has held roles with organizations like the Canadian Political Science Association and AuthorAID.
De Silva’s teaching includes advanced courses on international relations theory, human rights frameworks, and African political dynamics. She actively supervises MA and PhD students in Political Science, offering potential funding for research on African regional human rights. Her awards include the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2023) and the British International Studies Association African Affairs Prize (2016).
Her research explores the role of international courts in global governance, state resistance to human rights mechanisms, and Canada’s domestic and international human rights policies. Recent work addresses the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights’ challenges and the Malabo Protocol’s advocacy for an African Criminal Court. She frequently engages with media on issues like pandemic-related human rights and anti-racism advocacy.
