Nicole Beauchemin

Nicole Beauchemin is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Department of Oncology at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine, where she conducts research at the Goodman Cancer Institute in Montreal, Quebec. Her laboratory focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cancer development and progression, with particular emphasis on the CEACAM1 protein family.

Dr. Beauchemin earned her PhD in Biochemistry from the Université de Montréal in 1985. Her research has consistently centered on understanding the dual roles of CEACAM1 proteins in cancer biology - functioning as tumor suppressors in early-stage cancers while paradoxically promoting metastasis in advanced disease. Her work spans molecular, cellular, and in vivo approaches, utilizing both cell culture models and genetically engineered mouse models.

Beauchemin's research interests encompass cancer cell adhesion, tumor metastasis mechanisms, immune regulation in cancer, and the molecular pathways controlling CEACAM1 expression and function. Her laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding how CEACAM1 regulates immune cell function, tumor angiogenesis, and the metastatic cascade, particularly in colorectal cancer.

Analysis of her recent publications (2020-2024) reveals a strong focus on CEACAM1's role in immune regulation, particularly its interactions with TIM-3 and other immune checkpoints, as well as its involvement in microbiome-cancer interactions and TGF-β signaling pathways. Her work increasingly integrates multi-omics approaches to understand CEACAM1's complex functions across different cancer types and stages.

As Principal Investigator at the Goodman Cancer Institute, Dr. Beauchemin leads a research team investigating the molecular mechanisms of CEACAM1 in cancer biology. Her laboratory employs a range of techniques including molecular biology, cell culture, mouse models of cancer, and increasingly, high-dimensional immune profiling and microbiome analysis to unravel the complex roles of CEACAM1 in cancer progression and metastasis.
