Nicole Angotti is an interdisciplinary scholar affiliated with American University (AU) as Associate Director of the Center on Health, Risk, and Society, and holds a Visiting Associate Research Professor position at the University of Maryland’s Maryland Population Research Center. She previously served as a Hewlett Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Public Health in South Africa.
Angotti holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in International Educational Development from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a BA in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego.
Her research focuses on the cultural and social dimensions of health equity, with emphasis on HIV/AIDS, aging populations, and global health interventions. Central themes include: (1) the intersection of epidemics with social structures, (2) demographic data methodologies, and (3) intergenerational health vulnerabilities in sub-Saharan Africa. Notable projects include studies on HIV vulnerability among older adults, unintended consequences of global health policies, and youth underemployment’s impact on aging populations.
Her work has been funded by prestigious institutions including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and DC Center for AIDS Research (DC CFAR). Current projects investigate intergenerational health interventions in South Africa and reimagining verbal autopsy methodologies for improved cause-of-death analysis.
Angotti teaches courses on gender, poverty, health, and medical sociology at AU. She actively contributes to academic communities as a member of the American Sociological Association, Population Association of America, and Global Health and Development sections of ASA.
