Amy Conroy, PhD, MPH is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. She maintains her primary office at 550 16th Street, #3166, San Francisco, CA 94158, and serves as a Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded grants focused on global health equity.
Her educational background includes a B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics focus) from the University of Iowa, M.P.H. and Ph.D. in Health and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Colorado Denver, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in AIDS Prevention Studies at UCSF's Center for AIDS Prevention Studies.
Dr. Conroy is a behavioral scientist specializing in dyadic health interventions for HIV-affected couples, with research spanning alcohol use disorders, cardiometabolic comorbidities, mental health, and relationship dynamics. Her work primarily occurs in Southern Africa (Malawi, South Africa, Kenya), employing mixed-methods and dyadic analysis techniques grounded in relationship science theory. Recent publications reveal a strong trend toward couple-based interventions addressing multimorbidity management, economic empowerment, and implementation science frameworks for HIV care.
She has received multiple prestigious awards including four UCSF Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) awards between 2013-2021, recognizing her contributions to HIV/AIDS research and socio-behavioral science.
- UCSF Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Mentored Scientist Award in HIV/AIDS Research (2013-2014)
- CFAR Extension Award in HIV/AIDS Research (2017-2018)
- Mentored Scientist Award in HIV/AIDS Research (2019-2020)
- CFAR Early-Career Excellence Award in Socio-Behavioral Research (2021)
Dr. Conroy actively mentors early-career faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, with particular emphasis on supporting female trainees navigating work-life balance and academic advancement. Her current research portfolio includes six active NIH grants totaling over $5 million, with roles as Principal Investigator on three major projects including an R01 on economic interventions for alcohol reduction in Malawi and an R34 on perinatal depression interventions. She leads the Mlambe research initiative and collaborates with the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences, focusing on implementation science approaches to improve health outcomes for couples affected by HIV in resource-limited settings.
