Nicolas Voelcker is a Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University, and holds roles as Scientific Director of the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication and Science Leader at CSIRO. Previously, he was Professor at the University of South Australia’s Mawson Institute, Deputy Director of the Mawson Institute, and Leader in the Australian Research Council’s Bio-Nano Science & Technology Centre. His research focuses on porous semiconductor materials, biosensors, drug delivery systems, and nanotechnology applications in biomedicine.
Education: BSc (University of Saarland, 1993), MSc (RWTH Aachen, 1995), PhD (DWI Leibniz Institute, 1999). Postdoctoral work at Scripps Research Institute, followed by academic roles at Flinders University and the University of South Australia.
Research Interests: Development of nanostructured materials for biosensors, biomaterials, and drug delivery. Current projects include wearable biosensors, antimicrobial technologies, and targeted drug delivery for cancer and neurological disorders. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health and environmental sustainability.
Scientific Awards: Tall Poppy Science Award, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, and multiple fellowships from DFG, CSIRO, and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Recognized as a finalist for South Australian Scientist of the Year and the Australian Innovation Challenge.
Grants & Projects: Lead over 46 projects, including ARC grants, industry collaborations (e.g., Proton Intelligence Australia), and initiatives in cell therapy manufacturing and bio-nano convergence. Current research explores antimicrobial surfaces, microneedle arrays, and brain-targeted nanocarriers.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication and leads interdisciplinary teams in biomaterials and nanomedicine. Collaborations span global institutions and industry partners, advancing translational research in healthcare technologies.
