Dr. Nicolas Dzamko is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Centre within the Central Clinical School. He holds affiliations with the Charles Perkins Centre and the Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation. His research focuses on understanding Parkinson's disease mechanisms, particularly genetic causes and therapeutic targets. He completed a biomedical science degree at Flinders University, a PhD at the University of Melbourne, and postdoctoral training at the Garvan Institute and MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit.
- Education: B.Sc. (Biomedical Science, Flinders University), PhD (University of Melbourne)
- Postdoctoral Training: Garvan Institute of Medical Research, MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit (Dundee)
Research Interests: Investigating LRRK2 phosphorylation, alpha-synuclein pathology, and inflammatory pathways in Parkinson's disease. Current projects include LRRK2 inhibitors' effects on neural stem cells and immune cell biomarkers.
Key Themes: Neurosciences and Mental Health, Healthy Ageing. Approaches: Cellular Signaling, Protein Targeting/Trafficking.
- Grants: Multiple MJFF-funded projects on lipid dysregulation, LRRK2 biomarkers, and immune profiling
- Students: Advising Frank TANG (alpha-synuclein pathology) and Yilin ZHOU (3D brain organoid models)
Labs/Teams: Active in the Brain and Mind Centre and collaborating on drug discovery initiatives. Future work emphasizes translational research for Parkinson's diagnostics and therapies.
