Nicolaos Stavropoulos is a Professor of Law and Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He holds one of three permanent legal philosophy posts established by the university, teaching and supervising research in legal philosophy. His research focuses on legal and political philosophy, the philosophy of language, and jurisprudence. Stavropoulos completed his DPhil at Brasenose College, Oxford, and previously practiced law while serving as Special Adviser in Greek government policy units. He is a Law and Public Affairs Fellow at Princeton University and serves on the boards of Legal Theory and Law and Philosophy. He co-hosts the podcast The Jurisprudes.
His education includes a B.Jur from Athens, LL.M. from London, and D.Phil. from Oxford. His major works include Objectivity in Law (Clarendon Press, 1996) and an upcoming edited volume Interpretivism and its Critics. Current research explores the grounds of law and the intersection of morality and history in legal frameworks.
Stavropoulos' publications span legal interpretivism, coercion's role in law, and obligations theory. His recent articles analyze debates in legal theory and the foundations of legal validity. He actively contributes to academic discourse through podcasts, fellowships, and editorial roles in legal journals.
