Nicola Roberts is an Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Sunderland, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences. She holds degrees from Teesside University, University of Leicester (MSc), University of Bath (PhD), and a MA in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Her academic roles include serving as a Senior Fellow of the HEA, Principal Lecturer, and member of the University's Academic Board until 2025.
Her research focuses on sexual violence, domestic abuse, active bystander training, offender rehabilitation, and campus safety. Notable projects include analyses of university sexual violence reporting systems, transgender student safety perceptions, and institutional support for research staff. She leads initiatives such as the Emerald Project and the Bystander Project, aiming to enhance student safety and evaluate intervention effectiveness.
Roberts has contributed to over 50 publications and serves on review boards for journals and the Association of University Chief Security Officers.
