Nicola Monaghan is a Principal Lecturer in Law at the University of Worcester, affiliated with the School of Law within the Institute of Arts and Humanities. She has been teaching at the institution since the School of Law was established in 2016. Alongside her academic role, she is an unregistered barrister and a member of the Honourable Society of Middle Temple.
Nicola holds a LL.B. (Hons) in Law from Warwick University, an LLM in Criminal Litigation from City, University of London, and a Bar Vocational Course qualification also from City, University of London.
Her research focuses on Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and the Law of Evidence, with a particular emphasis on jury misconduct and the criminal trial process. She has published extensively in journals such as the Journal of Criminal Law, International Journal of Evidence and Proof, and Information and Communications Technology Law, and her work has been widely cited by academics and the Law Commission. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD on the jury system.
Nicola is the author of key textbooks including Criminal Law Directions (8th ed., Oxford University Press, 2025) and Law of Evidence (Cambridge University Press, 2015). She has also edited or co-edited several volumes, including Contemporary Challenges in the Jury System: A Comparative Perspective (Routledge, 2024) and Financial Crime and Corporate Misconduct: A Critical Evaluation of Fraud Legislation (Routledge, 2018).
Her current research includes a PhD on the jury system, exploring contemporary challenges and comparative perspectives. She actively contributes to legal discourse through her publications and academic engagements.
