Dr. Nicola Hancock is an Associate Professor in Physiotherapy at the School of Health Sciences, University of East Anglia (UEA), and currently serves as Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Innovation (APVC-I). She holds multiple roles, including Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee for the European Life After Stroke Forum (ELAS) and membership in the International Neurological Physical Therapy Association's Research Strategy Group. Her academic background includes a first-class BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy (University of East London, 1992) and a PhD from UEA (2014), focusing on reciprocal pedalling exercise for post-stroke lower limb function.
Research Interests: Her work centers on stroke rehabilitation, particularly early recovery of lower limb movement, personalized rehabilitation approaches, and innovative technologies. Notable projects include developing devices to retrain walking post-stroke, leading NHS-funded evaluations of stroke telerehabilitation, and co-creating the ViaTherapy app for upper limb rehabilitation guidance.
Grants & Awards: Key funding includes £150,000 for the 'Bridges' model implementation (2019–20), £74,786 for East of England stroke telerehabilitation evaluation (2023), and a £80,000 NHS England project on Advanced Clinical Practice Credentials. In 2016, she received an ACPIN Fellowship for her contributions to neurorehabilitation.
Teaching & Service: She teaches neurological rehabilitation and innovation at UEA. Nationally, she contributed to National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke (2008–2016) and peer reviews for journals like Physiotherapy and BMC Health Services Research.
