Dr. Nicola Cunningham is a Lecturer (MacMillan Cancer Support) in the Health Sciences department at the University of Stirling. Her research focuses on the experiences of people living with dementia, cancer, and multimorbidities, alongside the training and support needs of the social and community care workforce. She holds a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Sociology and Social Policy, an MSc in Applied Social Research (with distinction), and a PhD from Stirling University. Her work aligns with the University's strategic 'Living Well' theme, emphasizing participatory co-design and collaboration with third-sector and private homecare providers.
Current research includes understanding the needs of homecare workers supporting individuals with dementia and cancer, and theoretical work exploring welfare rights, social isolation, and frameworks for home-care provision. Completed projects include a Chief Scientist Office-funded study and research on stroke survivor and carer views toward stem cell trials. She collaborates with the Cancer Care Research Group and Enhancing Self-Care Research Group, and holds a Senior Fellowship from Advance HE.
Her research interests also extend to funeral and food poverty, disability welfare reform, and integrating health/social care services. Dr. Cunningham emphasizes a rights-based approach to wellbeing and care, bridging academic theory with professional practice development.
