Dr. Katherine Knighting is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Palliative & Supportive Care at Edge Hill University's School of Medicine within the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine. She leads research focusing on family caregivers, childhood cancer survivors, and individuals with complex healthcare needs. Her work integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches to improve care delivery and support systems.
Key roles include Faculty Lead for Patient/Public Involvement in Research and Chair of the University Health-related Research Ethics Committee. She teaches research methods in medical programs and supervises PhD/Master’s students exploring topics like advance care planning and digital legacies for families affected by Motor Neurone Disease.
Recent projects include developing the Carers’ Alert Thermometer (CAT-S) for stroke caregivers and evaluating palliative care programs for children. Her research emphasizes caregiver support tools, needs assessment, and ethical healthcare practices.
Over 69 publications span topics like family caregiver experiences, pediatric palliative care, and bereavement support. Ongoing grants include studies on cancer survivorship and hospice provision for young adults.
