Nicola Countouris

Prof Nicola Countouris is a Professor of Labour Law and European Law at University College London's Faculty of Laws. He joined UCL in 2009 and was promoted to Professor in 2015. Previously, he taught at the Universities of Reading, LSE, and Oxford, where he earned his DPhil under Prof Mark Freedland. From 2020–2023, he served as Director of Research at the Brussels-based European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), part of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).

His research focuses on Labour Law and European Union Law, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). He has collaborated with the International Labour Office and European Commission, and held Visiting Professor roles at Bologna, Pompeu Fabra, Nantes, and Seinan Gakuin Universities.

Prof Countouris co-founded UCL’s Labour Rights Institute and sits on the Executive Committee of the Institute of Employment Rights. He is a contributing editor for the International Labour Law Reports, European Labour Law Journal, and the Italian Rivista Giuridica del Lavoro e della Previdenza Sociale, and a founding member of the international Labour Law Research Network.
