Dr Nicola Brown is an Associate Professor in Women’s Health and Performance at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, and Subject Lead of Research in the Faculty of Sport, Technology and Health Science. Her work focuses on female-specific health issues, particularly breast health in sport and exercise, with emphasis on improving education and policy advocacy. She co-developed the Treasure Your Chest initiative, reaching 20,000 students across 200 schools, and collaborates with organizations like the Rugby Football Union and the UK Parliament to advance women’s health awareness.
Her research spans breast pain management, sports bra design, and adolescent breast health education. She is a certified ISAK Level III anthropometrist and contributes to the Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth. Dr Brown also serves on the executive board of the Women in Sport and Exercise Academic Network, promoting gender equity in academic and athletic spaces.
Key research themes include the biomechanical impact of breast movement during exercise, public health interventions for women’s sports participation, and the societal perception of breast health. Her publications address clinical measurements, sports injury prevention, and cultural barriers to physical activity among women.
Dr Brown actively engages with media and policy to translate research into actionable initiatives, such as advocating for better sports bra standards and improving breast health education in school curricula. She supervises multiple PhD students exploring women’s health topics and has mentored graduates contributing to clinical and academic advancements.
