Dr Nicola Ashmore is a Senior Lecturer in Art and Design History at the University of Brighton's School of Art and Media. She leads the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing and is affiliated with the Centre for Design History. Her research focuses on collaborative art practices for social change, particularly through remakings of Picasso's Guernica, and sustainable international development. She has curated major exhibitions like Guernica Remakings, touring across the UK, Mauritius, South Africa, Spain, and Nepal since 2019. She received the 2023 Internationalisation Award for Research and three AHRC grants.
Education: PhD in Art and Museum Practices from the University of Brighton (2003–?).
Research Interests: Cross-cultural art collaborations, community-based art, museum practices, and art as activism. Her work emphasizes marginalized voices and global solidarity through projects like Kids’ Guernica workshops with refugees and South African communities.
Exhibitions & Projects:
- Guernica Remakings exhibition series (2019–2023) in Salford, Mauritius, London, Barcelona, Nepal, and South Africa.
- 2022 UN Creative Economy-funded workshops in South Africa.
- 2023 Nepal tour addressing caste and gender equality with Sirjana College students.
