Nico Ehlers

Nico Ehlers serves as a Research Fellow at the Department of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Building, Technical University of Munich since 2021. His work focuses on developing methodologies for sustainable urban development and building practices within the Chair of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Building.

His educational background includes a Master of Science in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building from the Technical University of Munich (2018-2020), complemented by safety engineering training at the same institution. Prior professional experience includes HVAC project management at Canzler GmbH (2020-2021) and research assistant roles at TUM's Institute for Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Building (2019-2020).

Research interests center on life cycle assessment at urban scales, comparative analysis of construction materials (particularly timber versus concrete), and energy system optimization through building simulation. His work integrates circular economy principles with climate-resilient urban planning, addressing critical gaps in district-level sustainability metrics and resource efficiency.

Recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on practical applications of life cycle assessment for non-residential buildings, carbon sequestration potential in timber construction, and thermal mass considerations in building energy performance. His research consistently bridges theoretical modeling with real-world implementation challenges in sustainable urban development.

As part of TUM's research team, Ehlers contributes to major projects including Building Climate–Municipal (BauKlima-Kommunal), CircularGreenSimCity, and Klimalyse, focusing on translating sustainability metrics into actionable urban planning frameworks.
