Dr Nicky Rycroft is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology and Deputy Head of the Division of Psychology at London South Bank University (LSBU). He is affiliated with the Nicotine, Tobacco, and Vaping (NTV) Research Group and the Centre for Addictive Behaviours Research. Rycroft joined LSBU in 2005 after completing his D.Phil in Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex (2002–2006) and holds a BSc (Hons) Psychology (first class, 1998–2001). His teaching focuses on biological and applied psychology, as well as psychopharmacology for final-year undergraduates and MSc students.

Rycroft’s research centers on psychopharmacology, investigating how drugs impact brain function and behavior. Current projects include studying perceived risks of cognitive enhancers/recreational drugs, nicotine’s effects on non-drug rewards, peer influences on vaping, and substance use therapy access for LGBTQ+ communities. His work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Recent research highlights include examining off-prescription modafinil use, vaping vs. smoking dependence, and peer dynamics influencing substance use. Earlier studies explored alcohol attention bias, MDMA’s cognitive effects, and nicotine’s role in oculomotor control.
Rycroft’s advising includes one documented supervised work. His research has garnered citations (e.g., 26 for the 2015 'Neknomination' study) and social media engagement. He collaborates with teams like the NTV Research Group and contributes to peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Cognitive Enhancement and Addictive Behaviors.
