Dr. Nicki Bakko Toliver serves as Associate Professor of Music and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Wartburg College since 2014. She conducts the Castle Singers (Mixed Chamber Ensemble) and St. Elizabeth Chorale (Kantorei), teaches choral/music education methods for K-12, voice, and Contemporary Issues in Music Education, and supervises student teachers in the Teacher Education Program.
Her educational background includes:
- Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting, North Dakota State University
- Master of Music in Choral Music Education and Conducting, Arizona State University
- Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Music Education, Concordia College, Moorhead
Dr. Toliver's research centers on systemic gender bias in rehearsal environments and cultivating leadership skills among future educators, with particular emphasis on empowering female teachers and conductors. Her work bridges practical music education with social equity frameworks to transform pedagogical approaches in choral settings.
She actively serves as chair for SSAA ensembles in the Midwestern ACDA Resource and Repertoire Leadership group and as College and University chair for the Iowa Music Educators Association. Beyond academia, she maintains an active profile as a church musician, adjudicator, clinician, and performer across multiple states.
