Professor Nick Wailes serves as the inaugural Dean, Lifelong Learning at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Director of the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM). Previously, he held roles as AGSM Director and Senior Deputy Dean (External Engagement) at the UNSW Business School. His academic career spans multiple institutions including the University of Sydney and the University of Auckland, along with visiting positions at leading international business schools.
Nick's research focuses on international and comparative employment relations and the impact of technology on organizations. His work demonstrates expertise in analyzing employment relations across different national contexts, particularly in the automotive and banking industries. He has published extensively in leading journals including Industrial Relations and The Journal of Strategic Information Systems. His more recent research addresses the evolving nature of work, including studies on the gig economy and its implications for traditional employment frameworks.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on how globalization affects employment relations, with particular attention to Australia and New Zealand as comparative cases. His work on technology implementation, especially regarding Human Resource Information Systems and Enterprise Resource Planning systems, shows how technological change interacts with organizational structures and human resource practices.
Nick holds degrees in History, Economics and Management Studies from the University of Auckland and a PhD in Work and Organisational Studies from the University of Sydney. He teaches and consults in leadership, strategy, disruption, and change management, bridging academic research with practical applications for organizational effectiveness.
