Professor Nick Vaughan-Williams is Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham. He holds a concurrent Professorship in International Politics and an Honorary Professorship in Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick. His research focuses on borders, migration, and security, supported by grants totaling over £3.6M from the ESRC, Leverhulme Trust, and British Academy. He chairs the Academy of Social Sciences’ Forum for Leaders in Social Science and co-edits the Routledge Interventions book series. Vaughan-Williams has advised UK and EU institutions on migration policy and border security, contributing to the 2021 UK Integrated Review.
Education: BA and MA in Modern History and International Relations (University of Oxford); MA (University of Warwick); PhD (University of Wales, Aberystwyth). Professional roles include Vice-Provost at Warwick (2021–2024), Head of PAIS at Warwick (2015–2018 and 2019–2021), and lectureships at Exeter and Aberystwyth.
Research interests emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to border security, including vernacular narratives, offshore bordering practices, and the socio-political impacts of migration. His work bridges theory and practice, analyzing everyday experiences of insecurity among citizens and migrants. Recent publications include Vernacular Border Security (Oxford UP, 2021) and Reclaiming Migration (Manchester UP, 2021). His articles explore gendered security perceptions, temporal dimensions of border politics, and the reconfiguration of sovereignty.
Major awards include the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2015) and the Association for Borderlands Studies Gold Book Award. He supervises over 30 PhD students and leads collaborative projects on EU border policies and pandemic preparedness. Vaughan-Williams is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and contributes to editorial boards of Political Geography and Alternatives: Global, Local, Political.
