Dan Bulley

Professor Dan Bulley is Head of the School of Law and Social Sciences at Oxford Brookes University (since February 2024) and holds the title of Professor of International Relations (since September 2022). Previously, he taught at Queen's University Belfast and the University of Warwick. His research focuses on ethics in international politics, poststructuralist theory, and migration studies, particularly exploring how concepts like hospitality and spatial power shape global governance. He has authored books including A Relational Ethics of Immigration (Oxford UP, 2023) and co-edited After Grenfell: Violence, Resistance and Response (Pluto, 2019). His work critiques Eurocentric frameworks in ethics and emphasizes decolonial perspectives.

Research interests include: migration ethics, international hospitality practices, power dynamics in global politics, postcolonial theory, and the role of ethics in foreign policy. Recent work examines non-European approaches to immigration ethics, such as Tanzania's Ujamaa philosophy, and the ethical implications of refugee governance in Europe.

Collaborative projects include the RCUK-funded ‘Treating People as Objects: Ethics, Security and the Governance of Mobility’ (2014–2016), which explored migration ethics and border control mechanisms. He is affiliated with the Centre for Global Politics, Economy and Society (GPES) at Oxford Brookes.

Professor Bulley has supervised over a dozen PhD students in areas like poststructuralist IR, international ethics, and memory politics. His publications span journals such as Millennium, European Journal of International Relations, and Security Dialogue.
