Nick Talbot is Executive Director and Group Leader at The Sainsbury Laboratory, where he investigates fungal pathogenesis in plants. His research focuses on Magnaporthe oryzae, the causal agent of rice blast disease, one of the world's most destructive crop diseases.
Research Focus: The Talbot group studies infection mechanisms of pathogenic fungi, particularly appressorium-mediated plant invasion, host-pathogen interactions, and cellular reprogramming during fungal development. Recent work employs live-cell imaging and multi-omics approaches to understand infection biology.
Recent Publications: Current research explores fungal development stages, cellular death mechanisms during infection, and symbiotic relationships in lichen systems, revealing new dimensions of fungal biology.
Laboratory: Leads a research group of 17 scientists and technicians working on fundamental mechanisms of fungal pathogenicity and plant immune responses.
