Professor Nicholas Talbot is the Executive Director of The Sainsbury Laboratory and a member of the Norwich Institute for Healthy Aging at the University of East Anglia. His research focuses on plant pathology, fungal biology, and host-pathogen interactions, particularly involving the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae.
His work integrates cell biology, genetics, and genomics to elucidate fungal infection mechanisms, including how pathogens suppress plant immunity and invade tissues. He has led major projects on septin-dependent infection processes, turgor sensor kinases, and durable rice blast resistance for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Recent research outputs highlight advancements in lichen symbiosis analysis, live cell imaging of pathogenesis, immune receptor engineering, and regulated cell death during plant infections. These publications span plant biology, microbiology, and molecular genetics, emphasizing fungal pathogenesis and agricultural biotechnology.
Scientific awards and honors include:
- Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa, 2018)
- EMBO Member (2013)
- Fellow of The Royal Society (FRS, 2014)
- Fungal Biology Research Award (2016)
He has secured grants from BBSRC, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Leverhulme Trust, and serves on advisory boards for the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and John Innes Council.
