Nicholas Talbot is a Professor and Executive Director of the Sainsbury Laboratory since 2018. Previously, he held leadership roles at the University of Exeter, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Head of the School of Biosciences. His research focuses on plant-microbe interactions, fungal biology, genetics, and plant disease.
- Education: BSc in Microbiology (University of Wales, Swansea, 1983-86), PhD in Molecular Genetics (University of East Anglia, 1986-90).
Talbot's work addresses mechanisms of fungal pathogenesis in plants, particularly rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae and wheat pathogen Mycosphaerella graminicola. He has contributed to understanding molecular genetics of fungal infection processes.
His research has attracted significant funding, including an ERC Advanced Investigator Award (2012-2017) and grants from BBSRC, the Halpin Trust, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
- Scientific Awards:
- Fellow of the Royal Society (2014)
- ERC Advanced Award (2012-2017)
- EMBO member (2013)
- President’s Medal, Society for Experimental Biology (2000)
- Berkeley Award, British Mycological Society (1999)
Talbot has supervised 29 PhD students, 23 postdoctoral fellows, and numerous visiting scientists. His leadership extends to editorial roles (e.g., The Plant Cell, New Phytologist) and committee memberships (BBSRC, ERA-NET Plant Genomics).
