Nick Smith is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He has been at Sydney since 2005, previously serving as a Lecturer in Philosophy at Victoria University of Wellington (2001–2004). He holds a PhD (2001) and MA (1998) from Princeton University, and a BA (Hons) from the University of Sydney (1995).
His research focuses on logics, philosophy of language, vagueness, decision theory, and philosophy of time. He has authored influential books such as *Logic: The Laws of Truth* (2012) and *Vagueness and Degrees of Truth* (2008), and contributed to journals like *The Philosophical Quarterly*, *Synthese*, and *Mind*. His work bridges formal logic with philosophical inquiry, exploring topics like fuzzy logics, temporal metaphysics, and belief functions.
Smith supervises current PhD students in projects including 'Truthmakers for Vagueness' and 'Tenselessness of Time'. He has held grants from the European Commission and Australian Research Council, and his awards include Fellowship in the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
His teaching spans courses like PHIL1012 Introductory Logic and PHIL4111 Formal Philosophy. He is also affiliated with The Vere Gordon Childe Centre at the University of Sydney.
