Patrick Greenough is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of St Andrews, where he is affiliated with the Arché Philosophical Research Centre for Logic, Language, Metaphysics and Epistemology. His academic journey includes significant research fellowships at prestigious institutions including the Australian National University, University of Sydney, and University of Oslo.
Dr. Greenough's primary research interests span multiple areas of philosophy:
- Epistemology, with focus on knowledge, skepticism, and epistemic entitlement
- Philosophy of logic, particularly examining paradoxes, vagueness, and the liar paradox
- Philosophy of language, with research on truth, assertion, and context
- Metaphilosophy, especially conceptual engineering and neutralism
- Mental illness and its philosophical implications
His recent scholarly work demonstrates a strong focus on truth theory and conceptual engineering, with publications exploring the consistency of truth, applications of conceptual engineering to theology, and the relationship between neutralism and conceptual revision. Greenough's research often bridges traditional philosophical problems with contemporary methodological approaches, particularly in how we should address philosophical concepts that may be defective or in need of revision.
Dr. Greenough has received numerous prestigious awards and fellowships throughout his career:
- Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Vagueness: Its Nature and Logic Project at Arche, University of St Andrews (2004)
- Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Epistemic Warrant Project at Australian National University (2007)
- Research Fellow in ARC funded Pragmatic Foundations of Language Project at Centre for Time, University of Sydney (2009)
- University Distinguished Visiting Professor at University of Connecticut (2010)
- Visiting Research Fellow at ConceptLab, University of Oslo (2017 and 2018)

He has also served as the PhilPapers editor for Truth, demonstrating his recognized expertise in this area of philosophy.
He is currently affiliated with the Arché Philosophical Research Centre at St Andrews and has been a network member for "Perspectival Thoughts and Facts" (PETAF) from 2010-2013. His ongoing research includes work on two books: "Against Conceptual Engineering" and "Knowledge: In Sickness and in Health."
