Dr Nick Holmes is an Associate Professor in Motor Control and Rehabilitation at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham. He leads The Hand Laboratory, focusing on the neural and behavioral mechanisms of hand and body movement coordination, and the human somatosensory system, particularly tactile perception on the hands. His research integrates transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electromyography (EMG), motion tracking, and psychophysics.
- BSc Psychology & Neuroscience
- MSc Neuroscience
- D.Phil Neuroscience
His research interests span motor control, rehabilitation, somatosensation, and statistical methods in neuroscience. He employs brain stimulation and behavioral techniques to explore how we perceive and control movement across the lifespan. His work has significant implications for neurorehabilitation and understanding sensorimotor integration.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on tactile perception, neural mapping of somatosensory cortex, aging and cognitive control, and methodological rigor in neuroscience. He has contributed to high-impact journals such as Journal of Neurophysiology, Experimental Brain Research, and Cortex, with emerging themes in scientific communication and research transparency.
Dr Holmes is actively involved in academic discourse and science communication, serving as an editor and contributing to discussions on research ethics and methodology.
- Member of the Experimental Psychology Society
He currently supervises one PhD student in their final year and welcomes new PhD candidates interested in motor control, somatosensation, and brain stimulation methods. He also produces a science news podcast called The Error Bar, demonstrating a commitment to public engagement and scientific literacy.
His laboratory, The Hand Laboratory, serves as a hub for innovative research in human sensorimotor function, combining experimental rigor with translational potential in rehabilitation science.
