Nick Fesette is an Associate Professor of Theater at Oxford College of Emory University. His work bridges academic research and artistic practice, focusing on critical prison studies, abolition, trauma theory, and modern performance. He holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and a B.A. from Hamilton College.
Research: Dr. Fesette’s scholarship examines carceral systems as performative structures, analyzing how prisons perpetuate racial and class violence. His current book project, Performance After Policing, uses abolitionist frameworks to deconstruct carceral logics. This work emerges from his five-year collaboration with the Phoenix Players Theatre Group at Auburn Correctional Facility.
Teaching & Artistry: He has directed over 50 productions including Medea, Men On Boats, and pandemic-era digital theater projects like Fragments and Connections. His pedagogy emphasizes collaborative creation and social justice.
Labs/Teams: Co-founder of Phoenix Players Theatre Group (Auburn Correctional Facility), a collective of incarcerated writers and performers.
