Professor Bruce A. Levitt has been a faculty member in the Department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences since 1986. As department chair from 1986–1995, he oversaw the completion of the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts and academic restructuring. He co-founded the Phoenix Players Theatre Group at Auburn Maximum Security Prison, where he has mentored incarcerated individuals in devising four original theatrical pieces since 2010.

Research Focus: Levitt specializes in prison theatre, new play development, and community-engaged performance. His work combines applied theatre, social justice, and transformative pedagogy, emphasizing autobiographical storytelling and trauma engagement for incarcerated populations.
Academic Collaborations: He co-teaches community engagement courses with Scott Peters (Development Sociology) and Shorna Allred (Natural Resources). His theatre company MIRTH produces off-Broadway works.
Notable Achievements: Recipient of Cornell's first Engaged Scholar Prize (2016). His collaborative prison theatre work has been documented in multiple peer-reviewed articles and a documentary Human Again.
