Dr Nick Ariotti is a Senior Research Fellow and Group Leader at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), University of Queensland. His research focuses on understanding the three-dimensional structure of cells at molecular resolution, particularly investigating endocytic processes and protein trafficking. His lab employs advanced cryogenic light and electron microscopy to study how dysregulation of lipids and proteins in the plasma membrane and endosomes contributes to diseases like cardiovascular disorders and cancers. Key projects include studying caveolae structure, cargo specificity in intracellular trafficking, and the role of eNOS in cardiovascular disease.
Research techniques include correlative cryo-light and electron microscopy, super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, and genome-editing tools. Collaborations with groups at IMB, UNSW Sydney, and others drive interdisciplinary approaches. His team includes postdocs, research officers, and PhD students like Muze Cheng. The lab’s work targets novel drugable mechanisms for cardiovascular diseases and integrates structural and cellular biology.
- Education: Advanced degrees in molecular biology/structural biology (details not explicitly stated in text).
- Collaborators: Parton Group, Collins Group, Ananthanarayanan Group (EMBL Australia).
- Labs/Teams: The Ariotti Group at IMB’s Centre for Cell Biology of Chronic Disease.
Publications span structural biology, virology, and cellular mechanisms, with a focus on lipid-protein interactions and disease models. Ongoing work explores mechanosensitive cell surface changes and mitochondrial dynamics.
